Dr. Butcher is the pastor of Bright Side Baptist Church, which operates the non-profit Bright Side Opportunities Corporation and the Bright Side Opportunities Center. In that capacity, he has been able to provide daycare services to lower-income families of Lancaster, giving scores of children a nurturing environment in which they can grow intellectually, spiritually and emotionally.

He also served twenty years as the Executive Director of the County Human Relations Commission and has been on the board of directors for the United Way, SouthEast Lancaster Health Service, the Urban League, Leadership Lancaster and Lancaster General Hospital.

In addition, Reverend Butcher and his wife, Katie, have helped to raise more than 20 foster children as well as their own four.

Reverend Butcher was educated in the Lancaster City Schools and graduated from Franklin and Marshall with a BA in English Literature. Following his graduation from F&M, Butcher attended Lancaster Bible College, where he earned his MA in Ministry. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from F&M and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.
